Projects: Power Generation

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - Building 72 / Power Plant Upgrade

Project Location: Kittery, Maine

Owner: United States Navy

Electrical Engineer: N.K. Engineers, Inc.

Mechanical Engineer: Saren Engineers

Design/Builder: Select Energy Services, Inc.

General Contractor: Abington Group

Description: This project entailed the creation of over 14 megawatts of power generation capacity. Phase 1 of the project consisted of the addition of a new turbine, heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) and exhaust stack within an early 1900's structure. The addition of these components necessitated extensive framing alterations and foundation work within the existing building envelope. In addition to reinforcing of the structural steel framing, to support the new equipment, extensive foundation work was required, particularly at the stack area where rock anchors were required to resist the overturning forces. Phase 2 of this project included the construction of an addition to house a new turbine, HRSG and exhaust stack. This building was constructed of a structural steel frame with a composite concrete roof framing system. Lateral wind and seismic forces were resisted by structural steel braced frames. Rock anchors were utilized once resistance to overturning forces in the stack; minipiles were utilized to support the turbine and the HRSG. Within the existing boiler building, two new boilers weight in excess of 120,000 pounds each were added at the third floor level. In order to conform to the applicable earthquake design requirements, these boilers were supported by a structural steel framework which was independent of the building structure.

Year Completed: 2000 (Phase 1); 2004 (Phase 2)
